Whirlpool on the Guiers Mort — Small format, oil on wood

A small waterfall, a branch wedged between two rocks, and the amusing whirlpool it creates in the current: this kind of detail, often overlooked, is what brings a scene of running water to life. It was this almost hypnotic rotation of the water around the obstacle that inspired the painting.

Painted largely en plein air, with a few finishing touches in the studio to refine the values and reflections, this small format captures the movement and transparency of the water, the quality of the light and the quiet humour of the scene.
