Festiv'Art Chartreuse 2026 — “L'eau et le lien”
Festiv'Art Chartreuse, Saint-Laurent-du-Pont
More information ↗Joseph E. Sherriff (Joseph Eric Sherriff) is a South African painter who has lived in France, in the Chartreuse massif, since 2009. He paints the streams of the Chartreuse in oil and watercolour — the Guiers Mort, the Pendu stream, the Petite Vache waterfall — around his studio in Saint-Pierre-de-Chartreuse, Isère.
Most of his paintings are made en plein air, on site, sometimes alla prima in a single session; others are finished or painted entirely in the studio, or grow out of an imagined scene. Every work offered on this site is a unique, signed original.
His father painted seascapes in South Africa under the name Robert Mallison. After a break of several years for family and professional reasons, Joseph resumed his artistic activity in 2025 and adopted the artist name Joseph E. Sherriff; he was formerly known as Joseph Caldwell, and earlier as Eric Caldwell.
He also teaches painting (watercolour, oil) and drawing (charcoal, graphite, pastel) classes, open to all levels.
